Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Mechanical Engineering

Job Description:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver campus) invites applications for up to 2 tenuretrack Assistant Professor positions in the areas of Renewable Energy Systems (renewable energy conversion, energy technologies) and/or Design in Dynamic, Evolving Built Environments (modeling, measurement, analysis & design in areas such as health & the environment, smart mobility or localized manufacturing). Appointment at the rank of tenured Associate or Full Professor may be considered for qualified cases.

The University’s President’s Academic Excellence Initiative (PAEI) in the Faculty of Applied Science aims to build a crossdisciplinary community of scholars in two interdisciplinary areas: 1) “Revolution in the Cycle: Transforming the Product Lifecycle for Global Good” and 2) “Healthy, Equitable, Adaptive Cities & Communities”. Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, and should demonstrate 1) clear potential to develop an independent, internationally recognized research program aligned with and contributing to the PAEI and 2) excellence in teaching. Applicants must also be eligible to obtain a full or limited license with Engineers and Geoscientists BC within 5 years of appointment. In addition to developing excellence in research, successful candidates are expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise and mentor Master’s and Ph.D. students, and provide service to the University and the community.

Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering (2 positions)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering invites applications for two probationary tenuretrack faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidates will integrate with the renewable energy and/or marine/ocean technology research groups in the faculty with demonstrated expertise in the area of fluid mechanics.

The successful candidates must provide evidence of demonstrated excellence in, and commitment to, research and teaching. The candidates will be expected to establish a strong externally funded research program, supervise graduate student research, participate in service activities at the Department level and beyond, and foster existing and new collaborations with government and industry, as well as collaborate with members of Dalhousie’s research community.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has established research strengths in the areas of marine/ocean engineering, energy and thermal fluids, materials engineering, controls and mechatronics, and design. Applications from candidates in the field of applied/experimental fluid mechanics and/or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are encouraged. Research areas that are of particular interest include (i) energy (renewable, storage, efficiency, building, sustainability), and (ii) marine/ocean technology. The successful candidates will also be able to teach a broad range of undergraduate courses in Mechanical Engineering and advanced topics related to their research activities at the graduate level.
