Patent Examiner

Job Description:

As a Patent Examiner, you will read and analyze inventions described in patent applications. Check out the Canadian Patent Database to have a glimpse of what a patent application looks like (see link above). You will search technical databases to ascertain how the invention improves upon the state of the art. You will communicate with the applicant, outlining your analysis and whatever defects need to be corrected before approving the patent.

Assistant Professor Teaching-Track, Automation

Job Description:

McMaster University’s Faculty of Engineering invites applications for a teaching-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering Practice and Technology located on the main university campus to begin on July 1, 2022.

Applicants must have an area of specialization in Electrical & Computer Engineering or a related Engineering discipline.

The successful applicant must have or be very near completion of a Ph.D. in Electrical & Computer Engineering, or a related discipline, by the time of the appointment. The applicant must also demonstrate excellence in teaching undergraduate university courses with subject matter expertise and teaching experience in courses such as teaches Control Theory, Electricity and Electronics, Motion Control, and Industrial Automation Systems.

A demonstrated understanding and commitment to student success, teaching excellence, quality education and applied pedagogical research within a university environment are mandatory. The successful candidate must demonstrate effective teaching methods and commitment to adopt modern and innovative teaching approaches, including techniques for online teaching and learning are key components of this role, as well as an ability to redesign courses based on learning outcomes and to develop the corresponding assessment tools. Industrial experience and demonstrated leadership roles would be considered a definite asset, as would experience with program management in an academic setting, including curriculum development and management of instructors and faculty. The qualified candidate must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures. A professional engineering license, or eligibility for registration, would be considered an asset. The applicant must demonstrate a record of excellence in teaching and research and a willingness and ability to contribute to the Department’s collegial and collaborative intellectual community as well as university-wide inclusive excellence goals and priorities.

While the primary role for this position is teaching (18 credit hours per year), the School expects faculty to engage in committee assignments and to participate in student and school events, as well as other service tasks, as assigned. In addition, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to engage in pedagogical research.

Probationary Tenure-Stream Assistant Professor, Sustainable Agriculture Engineering

Job Description:

The Department of Biological Sciences at Brock University invites applications for a probationary tenure-stream position in Sustainable Agriculture Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective January 1, 2022. This position is subject to final budgetary approval. This is a joint position between the Department of Biological Sciences and the soon to be established Department of Engineering in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in biological sciences (including related fields) and/or engineering and have relevant post-doctoral experience. Applicants should have a promising track record of scientific and research excellence as well as demonstrated strength in teaching and research supervision. The establishment of a successful, externally funded research program with supervision of undergraduate and graduate students is expected.  Relevant MSc and PhD programs are offered in Biological Sciences and in Biotechnology, with graduate programs in the new Department of Engineering to be developed in the future. The candidate will contribute to undergraduate/graduate teaching in both departments.

Niagara is home to substantial grape & tenderfruit, cannabis, and floriculture industries that abut the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Reserve. With this backdrop, we seek someone with a focus on innovating sustainable agricultural practices relevant to these and other local agricultural industries. We are particularly interested in candidates applying engineering principles to address emerging issues in clean production, sustainable production including soil rehabilitation, and crop technologies such as precision agriculture or big data/artificial intelligence approaches to monitoring and optimizing plant production. The candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with colleagues in the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre and the Cold Climate Oenology & Viticulture Institute and will have access to modern greenhouse facilities and university-owned agricultural land. There are abundant opportunities and significant support for research collaborations with the private sector in Niagara.

Manufacturing Process Engineer

Drive/facilitate actions to improve plant performance/initiatives in continuous improvement, relative competitive position and emerging environmental regulatory engineering support (CO2, NOx).

Coordinate and execute Process Safety Management related initiatives including PSV management, out of service equipment/systems and over pressure protection by system design. Provide additional support to process engineering workload including but not limited to process engineering backlog, PHA backlog, process monitoring guidelines/tools.

Determine root causes of problems via data analysis, troubleshooting and sound engineering principles.

Participate in the identification, planning and execution of equipment outages and major turnarounds

Participate in the capital and expense project definition, design and commissioning.

Provide expertise and implement solutions to improve plant performance within a multi-disciplinary team in the areas of Responsible Care, cost, reliability, profitability and capacity. Work within a multi-disciplinary team to resolve issues and implement solutions.
